Firefighters were called to several fires during the day, including a house fire at White Hills, a boat fire at Lake Eppalock and a grass fire in Bendigo East.
Over 8000 Powercor customers experienced outages throughout Bendigo and central Victoria during the evening.
The city sweated through temperatures of above 40 from before 11.30am to after 7pm.
Firefighters at a house fire on Morshead Court took extra safety precautions, as they battled the blaze during 45 degree heat.
Senior Station Officer Mark Nevill said the extreme weather made firefighting difficult, as firefighters faced a metabolic build up of heat.
The fire caused significant damage the house after it began in a back room and spread to the ceiling. It was called in at about 4.30pm, and under control 45 minutes after firefighters arrived.
Neighbours Carly Chalker and Leanne Ford took action to rescue the household’s pets when they smelt smoke.
Ms Chalker jumped the fence to rescue two dogs, while Ms Ford called Triple Zero. She was just in time, as soon as she lifted one dog over the fence the fire began to take off.
“Getting bitten was the least of my problems, honestly – I just wanted to get them out safe,” Ms Chalker said.
“I’m glad we got them out just in time because it got a lot worse.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
