EARLIER: A KENNINGTON man has praised firefighters for their response to a grass fire at East Bendigo.
Louie Petraglia decided to investigate after seeing smoke coming up in the vicinity of the airport about 1.30pm today.
He arrived at Victa Road about the same time he said the fire started taking off.
Mr Petraglia grabbed a small tree branch and attempted to fight the fire.
Another motorist stopped to offer assistance.
A third motorist joined them, lending fire extinguishers and about 20 litres of bottled water to the firefighting effort.
“Firefighters did an amazing job getting here quickly,” Mr Petraglia said.
He said it was lucky the wind died down when it did.
Mr Petraglia ceased fighting the fire, but remained at the scene as Forest Fire Management Victoria and Country Fire Authority units attended.
Police were also notified.
The area was cordoned off for fire investigation.
The area is now safe.
Traffic flow through the area was temporarily affected as firefighters attended.
