The airport weather station recorded a temperature of 45.2 degrees at 4.30pm.
Earlier, the temperature was recorded at 45 degrees precisely, at 3.21pm.
This is the eighth day this month above 40 degrees, and the hottest day since Black Saturday in 2009.
The previous hottest temperature for this year came on Friday, January 4, which reached a top of 44.5 degrees
Last summer, the maximum temperature was 43.5 degrees, which came on January 19 – also a Friday.
The highest temperature ever recorded at the Bendigo airport weather station is 45.4 degrees, which came on Black Saturday – February 7, 2009.
The previous record for January was hit on January 14, 2014, when the mercury hit 43.8 degrees.
UPDATE 3.50pm: Properties in central Victoria are no longer affected by forced power outages, according to Powercor.
A cool change should begin sweeping across central Victoria this afternoon, and arrive at Bendigo after 5pm.
UPDATE 1.45pm: Forced power outages are affecting 1681 premises in central Victoria.
Among the areas affected are Maldon – where more than 1100 premises are without power – Baringhup, Baringhup West, Bradford, Gower, McKenzie Hill, Muckleford, Neereman, Nuggetty, Shelbourne, Tarrengower, Walmer and Welshmans Reef.
Yesterday, the Australian Energy Market Operator said Victoria’s power supply would remain secure during the 4pm to 7pm peak.
EARLIER: The extreme heat affecting Victoria has led to scheduled blackouts to reduce the load on the power system, with Castlemaine and Muckleford among the areas to be affected.
The Australian Energy Market Operator has directed Powercor and CitiPower to begin load shedding, to reduce the risk of widespread, prolonged blackouts.
This means Powercor will begin rolling blackouts.
Across the state, some 60,000 premises will be affected.
“At this stage, we are expecting more favourable weather and supply-demand conditions mid-afternoon, reducing the need for scheduled supply interruptions into the evening, barring further major generation issues,” the AEMO said in a statement.
At 12.43pm, Bendigo recorded a temperature of 43 degrees.
More to come.
