There are currently more than 146,000 active cases in Victoria following rapid spread of the Omicron variant after the Christmas/New Year holiday period.
While the active cases numbers reported in the Central Goldfields (40) and Pyrenees Shires (16) are relatively low, MDHS executive officer Nickola Allan said numbers are expected to be higher due to delays in COVID-19 testing results and as people self-report following a positive rapid antigen test.
"Case numbers are rising rapidly due to the high transmission rate of the Omicron variant at a time when we have enjoyed additional freedoms over the holiday season," she said.
"We've seen a rapid jump in cases and health authorities are expecting case numbers to continue to rise over the next few days and weeks so it's important we continue to work together to remain calm and support each other as much as we can.
"While coronavirus can be a serious disease, we need to think of managing COVID-19 like a common cold and flu, unless the condition of you or someone you care for is deteriorating."
Mrs Allan said everyone can play their part to help to manage the current outbreak and avoid extra pressure on hospitals, testing services and local GPs.
Top tips include:
- Stay home if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or are unwell.
- Use a rapid antigen test as your first option and report your result if it's positive.
- Only seek PCR testing from dedicated testing centre if you are experiencing COVID-
- 19 symptoms or are a close contact who must get tested, and can't get a rapid
- antigen test.
- Monitor and manage mild symptoms at home where possible, and call on friends or
- family for help and support where possible.
- Call or visit your GP if your condition deteriorates but don't visit an emergency
- department or urgent care centre, unless extremely unwell. Contact an alternative
- service like Nurse on Call 1300 606 024 for advice
- Get vaccinated or sign up for your third dose as soon as eligible.
"We thank everyone for their patience and cooperation at a time when we know rising case numbers may be causing some concern," she said.
"Take comfort in knowing that most cases can be safely managed in the home and everyone is working around the clock to provide help and support to those who need it.
"The reality is that health services will continue to be stretched and testing services are currently at capacity despite increasing operating hours.
"Please continue to support each other and only come to us for a PCR test if you really need it in line with the guidelines.
"At this stage we are only testing people who have symptoms or close contacts who cannot access a rapid antigen test.

"Most importantly, if you have any symptoms and can't get access to a test straight away, please stay in isolation and monitor your symptoms until a test or appointment for PCR testing becomes available."
If you can't get an appointment at the drive-through testing clinic in Maryborough, don't go to your GP or present to the Urgent Care Centre. Testing is also available in Bendigo and Ballarat.
The state government recently released new testing guidelines following changes announced by the National Cabinet last week.
