How Bendigo Cup day 2021 unfolded race-by-race.

7. Volcanic Rock
8. Quiet Lucky

WHAT THEY SAID:
Winning jockey Jye McNeil:
"She's got plenty of upside. Just had a wide barrier to overcome today and Sam left it up to me for what to do from out there, and after she began so well I decided to roll forward and she had enough speed and enough toe to go forward.
"Really switched off lovely for me in the middle sectors and there was enough in the tank for her to finish strong.
"I was very happy with the way she found her rhythm and relaxed underneath me. Obviously it wasn't the choice to roll forward, but it worked out alright and I think she's got that upside to go through the grades."

WHAT THEY SAID:
Winning trainer Archie Alexander:
"Great, really rewarding for the owners. A very frustrating horse. He never gets good barriers and hasn't had much luck for a talented horse and I think for the job it has done today... after a couple of hundred metres we knew that a different horse had turned up today.
"He was on the speed on a big track and Jye gave him every chance.
"He comes here in good form off a couple of unlucky runs. This horse, two years ago he was running in the Guineas and he's always run well in nice races. I think he was third in the Bendigo Guineas two years ago."
Winning jockey Jye McNeil:
"First time I've been on him and he gave me a lovely feel to the gates. A lovely style of horse. Archie said he's been getting a little too far back in his races and setting himself a bit of a task.
"We were positive from the barriers. I wasn't trying to be outside the leaders. Probably more looking for a cart just off the speed. I rolled forward from that awkward draw and the leader wanted to go a bit quick, so we just sat off it and he came up and joined in nicely."

RACE 7 - Apiam Bendigo Cup (2400m).
HOW THEY FINISHED:
1. Wentwood
2. Smokin' Romans
3. Taramansour
4. Tooradin
5. Amade
6. Barade
7. Mosh Music
8. Constantinople
9. Aktau
WHAT THEY SAID:
Winning trainer Maddie Raymond:
"So tough and he's come so far in 12 months. It was nearly 12 months ago that he won the St Arnaud Cup and that was a sigh of relief. To get here today and win this race and see how well he is relaxing is a huge achievement from the whole team at home.
"I just wanted to see him relax. Obviously barrier one was a bit of question. He likes a bit of room, but he's come a long way. Harry gave him the perfect ride.
"The key to him is getting him to switch off, which he did do today. There were a few moments there where they steadied and I thought we might be in a bit of trouble. I thought Harry will have worked for that one today.
"Huge result for great owners and great for the stable.
"His attitude and racing manners is probably what held him back. To finally iron that out a little bit I still think that he's got plenty of improvement.
"I do have to pay credit to my partner, Paddy. He rides all the work. He's done the most fantastic job with him. He wasn't a horse that you would have said 12 months ago that you would have got out of bed for, but he certainly does now.
"Huge thrill. Just to see how far he has come as a horse. He was my very first horse when I got my trainers licence. Glen and Jane Davies sent this horse to me, so it is nice to reward them."
Winning jockey Harry Coffey:
"That's awesome. I'm actually a bit physically buggered. He's not an easy ride and I will admit I didn't get him to relax very well at all.
"He was really running on me the whole race and I was lucky there was a strong tempo the whole race with Tooradin and when Constantinople got caught wide we put a bit more pressure on.
"I was lucky that happened because if Michael (Poy on Constantinople) didn't then Linda (Meech on Tooradin) would have been able to give her horse a rest.
"What did we do? We only won by an inch. That's how the game works. Things fell into place and I must admit I didn't think I'd won. I was pretty physically buggered and I thought at least I rode it good.
"And Jye goes 'well done bud'. I said 'gee you're confident', you've probably beaten me the way Jye McNeil's luck has been lately. But awesome to get a Bendigo Cup.
"It is one of my favourite races. I've spent a lot of time around Bendigo and do a lot of work this way. When you live in Swan Hill you're driving through Bendigo a fair bloody bit. I know the town well.
"I had a lot to do with Maddie, both (of us) with our time at Darren Weir's. Darren probably set both our careers off in the right direction and both got us a go.
"Darren trained for the owners of Wentwood and now we're sharing the success unfortunately without Darren, but me and Maddie would not shy away from saying we're here because of what he did for us. We come from very similar backgrounds, painted with the same brush and as you can tell he's not the easiest of rides.
"Where you learn all your skills is where you've got to be thankful.
"For me, Bendigo is like a second home. My fiance and I lived here for a while and the travelling got a bit tough for me. I got a little but homesick and I wouldn't change a thing. Bendigo has been very good for me."

RACE 6 - Catanach's Jewellers BM64 Handicap (1100m).
HOW THEY FINISHED:
1. Duchess Of Dorset
2. Upper East Side
3. Real Gun
4. El Salto
5. Thorondor
6. Pill Box
7. Haystacks Calhoun
8. Joltin' Joe
9. My Boy Nick
10. Brazen Brando
11. Arroance
12. This Skilled Cat
13. Kiata
14. Maldestro
WHAT THEY SAID:
Dylan McGuiness on behalf of winning trainer Symon Wilde:
"Probably helped Real Gun missed the kick a little bit so was left a pair or two back and allowed Linda to find the fence and get a couple of easy cheap sectionals out there and kick on the turn. That was all she wrote, really.
"She's been given plenty of time. She was only lightly raced for her age. Marg Lucas (owner) has been patient enough to allow Symon and the team plenty of time to mature and develop up and is now reaping the rewards brilliantly."
Winning jockey Linda Meech:
"She gives you a nice feel. I actually had the fortune of having a little sit on her at the jump outs at Casterton so I knew her.
"Knowing today she was a bit sharper than she was at Casterton she just lobbed around and gave me a really nice ride. Today she was full of business.
"She sprang the lids really well and Real Gun and a few of the others didn't show as much speed as I thought they would and she took up the running and never looked like getting beaten."
......................................................
RACE 5 - Bendigo Locksmiths BM78 Handicap (1400m).
HOW THEY FINISHED:
1. Laffalong

RACE 4 - Filkel 3YO BM64 Handicap (1300m)

2. Toby Xpress
3. Euro Dandy
4. Brooklyn Boss
5. Yaphet
6. Brookline
7. Deprivation
8. Tramontana
9. Midnight Dream
WHAT THEY SAID:
Winning jockey Will Gordon:
"He's a very progressive horse. He's put a lot together since his last start, but he's still got a lot to go.
"Last start he was obviously very green, so I was quite keen to get a bunny (to chase) into the straight today.
"I expected there to be a bit more speed out wide to come across, but in saying that they did go slow, but he did show a really nice turn-of-foot and once we straightened up he knuckled down he was very good to the line."
......................................................
RACE 3 - BRB Electrical BM78 Handicap (1100m).
HOW THEY FINISHED:
1. Royal Tyke
2. Brentlyn's Trooper
3. South Parade
4. High Cost
5. The Billionaire
6. Humzz
WHAT THEY SAID:
Winning trainer Kym Hann:
"That's really satisfying. Especially for these owners. They've been been supporters of mine.
"I might have shot myself in the foot though winning a benchmark 78 with him. He might be a bit hard to place now.
"It was a shock (winning) that's for sure. I wasn't actually going to run in this. He was accepted for the benchmark 64, but when the acceptances came out there was only five in this race.
"So I rang them up and said 'if I accept will you run it' and they said they would. I said I might as well run in a six horse field for $50,000 with 54 kilos.
"His first two runs this time in, as bad as they looked, they weren't. He missed the kick at Swan Hill, came home well.
"Last start at Swan Hill he clipped heels and almost fell. Got the run of the race today - perfect ride by Harry. It has been a long time between drinks, but I think we're back now."
Winning jockey Harry Coffey:
"I got a bit of a shock myself with his turn-of-foot at the top of the straight. He had a lovely run and got into a lovely rhythm.
"Going for a track gallop, I was able to sit off The Billionaire and we just maneuvered into the race at the right time. The Billionaire gave me a nice kick, which gave me a good cart up.
"We we got around the bend I think he thought he was having a track gallop at home on a Tuesday. He let rip.
"It was a nice enough win, but Kym said to me then that we might take a fair old hit in the ratings point but that win today, and beating some nicer horses, he should be able to handle it and put a few more together."
......................................................
RACE 2 - Kym Hann Racing Maiden Plate (1100m).
HOW THEY FINISHED:
1. Snappy Secret
2. Apsara
3. Extreme Emotion
4. Forbes
5. Lidgate
6. Bank Bank Bank
7. Miss Mamba
8. Carlisle
9. Letthebanaflyhigh
WHAT THEY SAID:
Winning trainer Danielle Chapman:
"That was awesome. It was a great run, his first-up run, and we got held up at a crucial stage. The plan was to sit behind and, hopefully, run over the top of them again and that's that we did.
"I thought we were a bit too far back, so I thought we weren't going to to anything today, but he's a big baby and he doesn't know what he's doing at the moment.
"My husband picked him out at the Ready To Run and we always go for these problem horses that have got throat issues and he was one of them.
"We've given him plenty of time and it is paying off now."
Winning jockey Pat Moloney:
"Danielle is a terrific horsewoman. She does a good job with her small team. She gets a lot of horses that are broken-winded and rectifies that. She did the same with this horse. He's got a little wind issue but he's pretty sound otherwise.
"He's a nice promising horse.
"I reckon he should have won his first start, admittedly. He's just not the sharpest out of the gates and we got ourselves in a slowly run race and got out late and whooshed home. I said after that wherever they go next he'll win.
"I said that they should put him in on Bendigo Cup day. Up against the colts I thought 'maybe not today' but he showed it.
"Danielle has a lot of faith in him and a lot of faith in me. It was pretty soft in the end."
......................................................
RACE 1 - Smartline Finance Maiden Plate (1400m).
HOW THEY FINISHED:
1. Schuhbeck
2. Designer Dreamer
3. Fighting Arrow
4. Psycho Star
5. Regal Rave
6. Beans
7. Up All Night
8. Twelve Gauge
9. The Honourable One
WHAT THEY SAID:
Dom Rhoden on behalf of winner trainers Ben and David Hayes:
"He did deserve that. He's been in great form all of his career and hardly run a bad race. It is great to get the win away today.
"There were a few nervous moments there, but he fought on well with the blinkers back on and it was a good win.
"I think he'll get up to a mile, no worries, and I think there's plenty of wins in store.
"His coat is not quite there, but this will bring him on and he'll be cherry ripe third-up."
Winning jockey Daniel Stackhouse:
"I said to Dom before I went out that I'll just be positive and give him a nice tempo second run this preparation. He had the best form on the board and we thought we'd just be positive and use that.
"He still had a good think about things and at least for the connections he's got the win now."
