A YOUTH justice worker and a young person have been taken to hospital following an incident at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said the incident had been referred to Victoria Police.
It happened shortly after 4pm and was "quickly brought under control," according to the department.
The spokesperson said the youth justice worker was was taken to hospital for assessment.
The young person was taken to hospital due to a medical condition.
"Violent behaviour or assaults at youth justice centres are absolutely unacceptable, and the safety of staff and young people is paramount," the spokesperson said.
"New laws are now in effect that strengthen consequences for young people who assault youth justice custodial workers, damage property, and escape or try to escape.
"This includes a presumption they will serve their sentences on top of an existing period of detention."

Centre sources allege two young people assaulted a staff member in a "cowardly planned attack".
It was alleged the young people sought to gain access to the staffer's security pass.

Emergency services were called about 4.15pm today.
The Department of Justice and Community Safety has been contacted for comment.
Health and safety concerns prompted a cease work at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre in October last year.
It came after a number of incidents of violence against workers, which saw a number of people taken to hospital.
New rules, which the union said would "give power back to staff to make decisions in units as issues become apparent", were central to the resumption of work.
The rules were soon put to the test.
