Ryan won best lead actor in a drama and best screenplay in television for his show Mr Inbetween.
After creating for 2005 film The Magician, Ryan worked as a taxi driver in Echuca before Nash Edgerton offered to develop a television series.
Mr Inbetween follows The Magician's main character - Ray Shoesmith - a a go-between for shady types and their illicit dealings.
Delving into Ray's life, it tells stories of his efforts to maintain a work-life balance that keeps his worlds apart.
The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts awards recognised the best film, television, short form, and digital content making Ryan's win even more impressive.
His screenplay award was for the sixth episode of the third and final series of Mr Inbetween titled Ray Who?
Foxtel Group director of television Brian Walsh said it was wonderful to have so much good Australian shows on television.
"It has been an incredible year for Australian storytelling despite the hurdles thrown at the industry," he said.
"We are particularly thrilled to see Wentworth, Mr InBetween and Grand Designs recognised with wins tonight and know the love and support for these original series continue to live on with millions of fans right around Australia."
As well as Australia, Mr Inbetween has had positive reviews and response in the US.
Speaking to the Bendigo Advertiser in June, Ryan said the third series of Mr Inbetween would be the last.
"It was time to wrap it up, so I'm looking forward to putting finishing touches on it and away we go," he said.
"That's just how it worked out, I didn't know how many seasons it would be, so when we got to the third I felt it was time to wrap it. Sometimes shows end abruptly and that happens."
