Ryan, who writes and stars in the series, said the third season felt like a good time to wrap up the story of criminal for hire Ray Shoesmith.

"It was time to wrap it up, so I'm looking forward to putting finishing touches on it and away we go," he said. "That's just how it worked out, I didn't know how many seasons it would be, so when we got to the third I felt it was time to wrap it. Sometimes shows end abruptly and that happens."

Shoesmith was a character created by Ryan for the 2005 feature film The Magician. Following its release, Ryan moved to Echuca for almost a decade and drove taxi until director Nash Edgerton decided to adapt the film into a television series.

"After the film (I was in) Echuca for over 10 years. I was driving taxis mostly and writing in the early years I was there," he said. "Then I kind of gave up on making films and stuff and drove cabs for about five years. I knew Nash was trying to get (the show) made but I wasn't holding out. So it was a little bit of surprise."

Since premiering in 2018, Mr Inbetween has had critical acclaim in the US. Ryan also won the 2019 most outstanding actor Logie and best new talent at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.

"At the end of the day you want people to enjoy what you do and if you're getting awards it generally means you're doing something right," Ryan said. "You kind of hope that happens but you don't think it will necessary. But you hope. It's a nice validation that all these years you work on something you believe and people respond so positively. It's great."

Ryan came up with the character of Ray after reading books about hitmen and criminals. Ray is a go-between for shady types and their dealings while trying to be a good parent and manage his personal life.

"There's a little bit of him (from) some people I know but it was basically from reading books and biographies of hitmen," Ryan said.

"Coming up with ideas for Ray takes the most amount of time. But once you get a bunch of ideas, you map it out to where you think it should go and write it."

Ryan has a slew of project he is working and will spend this year focusing on a couple. He plans on staying in Australia to produce more shows.

"I've got about 25 projects on the go, so I have got to pare them down to a couple and start on them," he said. "At end of day, you don't need to go overseas to do stuff. The show was written here, made here and airs all over world. So you don't need to go anywhere else."
