Liberal Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said funding for risk reduction and mitigation initiatives would better prepare communities and reduce the loss and suffering that is so often caused by natural disasters.
The funds will be made available under the federal government's risk and resilience grants program.
"The program empowers local communities to develop solutions unique to their own local environment to mitigate the risks of natural disasters," Senator Henderson said.
"The grants recognise that local knowledge is imperative in designing strategies which incorporate historical knowledge of past flood events, the unique topography of the region and community need."
The funding includes:
- City of Greater Bendigo received $240,000 to develop the concept and detail design of the Bendigo Creek Levee from Racecourse Creek at the Midland Highway to Leans Road.
- Mount Alexander Shire Council received $50,000 to undertake a flood study at Harcourt.
- Golden Plains Shire Council received $70,000 to conduct a flood study to determine the impacts of riverine flooding at Teesdale.
- City of Greater Geelong received $25,000 to produce a detailed design for flood mitigation north of Lara.
The grants program is part of the National Partnership Agreement on Disaster Risk Reduction, which aims to reduce the risk and impact of natural disasters in line with the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework.
Other news:
Under the program, recipients make a co-contribution towards an initiative that is focused on identifying and mitigating potential natural disaster risks, such as climate change adaptation, designing resilient infrastructure and developing strategies to manage the local and regional risks of natural disasters.
