A MAN has died and a woman is seriously inured after a two-car crash at Toolleen.
Echuca Highway Patrol Sergeant Paul Nicoll confirmed the 68-year-old Bundoora man died at the scene of the Northern Highway crash.
Police, paramedics, the State Emergency Service, and fire crews were called to the collision near Hagans Lane about 4.50pm on Saturday.
Sergeant Nicoll said a four-wheel-drive towing a boat was driving north along the highway towards Echuca when it crashed into a silver sedan that was pulling out from a private property.
The sergeant said the driver of the sedan - the 68-year-old man - failed to give way when trying to turn right onto the highway, towards Melbourne.
Sergeant Nicoll said police did not believe there were any aggravating factors in the crash.
"At this stage, we're not looking at speed or alcohol or drugs as a contributing factor," the sergeant said.
"It's simply a matter of failing to give way after coming out of a private driveway."
The passenger of the sedan, a woman in her 60s, was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the four-wheel-drive towing the boat was uninjured in the crash.
His female passenger sustained moderate injuries and was transferred to Bendigo hospital on Saturday night by road ambulance, Sergeant Nicolls confirmed.
A State Emergency Service spokesperson said one of its crews from Heathcote worked to extract multiple patients from the two vehicles.
The Northern Highway was closed to traffic in both directions for about four hours as police analysed the scene and crews cleared the vehicles and debris from the road.
Sergeant Nicolls said the crash was a reminder to all motorists that they needed to be careful on rural roads, especially after the end of the state's coronavirus lockdowns.
"There are so many more cars on the road and people are travelling in the countryside, so they need to be really cautious," Sergeant Nicolls said.
"They need to take care with their driving, particularly when driving in unfamiliar areas.
"We have lots of collisions on these roads. People need to take their time and be cautious with their driving."
