As part of the National Breast Cancer Foundation's GO PINK month in June, Mr White made the pledge and dyed his beard pink.
"At the start of the month one of my work colleagues at Bendigo Station started raising funds and I thought it would be a great thing to be able to support her," he said.
"When it first started her aim was to raise $1000, but she's been able to raise even more than her original target."
Mr White's beard, which took approximately five years to grow, has caught the eye of several train travellers and members of the public in recent weeks.
That was all part of the plan - to make people stop and think.
"It really has been a great way of getting the word across," he said.
"The overall reaction has been very positive and there's been a few cheeky comments, but you can only expect that when you're doing something different."
Mr White has no history of breast cancer within his family, but that didn't stop him from stepping up to make a difference and inspire others to do the same.
"I've got four grandchildren, five sisters, six sisters-in-law and 20 nieces, so it gave me a fair amount of reason to help support cancer research," he said.
When not at work at the station, the other most likely place you will find Mr White is strolling the fairways at Axedale Golf Club.
"There's also been a bit of banter and funny quips out on the course but the best thing is the members at Axedale have followed it up with donations," he said.
"They all know where the heart is."
The NBCF currently has an array of research projects its undertaking which focus on early detection and preventative treatments.
