It's a bittersweet moment for Abe after dedicating over half of his life to the company.
"I have always been a big believer in new blood, change and fresh perspective," he said.
"I think that it is time and the committee is in a really good spot with a group of people that work together exceptionally well.
"I feel like it has been left in very safe hands and I feel now is the time.. Of course I will still be around - I love theatre, I love the company and I love Bendigo."
Abe joined the company at the age of eight, joined the committee at 14, became vice president at 18 and took over as president at 22.
Seeing much change over the years, Abe said the company has left a life-long mark on him.
"My time at BTC has been very informative in my personal and professional life," he said.
"It's probably because of my experience at the company that I got my very first job at The Capital when I was 14 and now I am working as production manager at Melbourne Theatre Company," he said.
"Having that opportunity to learn theatre from the ground up has been such a great experience."
Abe has been proud of many things over the years particularly in the committee's progress in the last few years in all areas of the operation.
"From the introduction of season launches and our workshop seasons; to implementation of a robust governance structure; incorporation of new systems, policies and procedures; and presentation of detailed annual reporting to show our members and supporters," he said.
"I'm most proud of the positive, supportive culture which has developed in the committee room.
"I know the time is right to step down and I wish the incoming committee well."
It's bittersweet but Abe's career path is on a very steep trajectory and the big city is calling him and their gain is our loss.

A highlight for Abe will always be being production manager for the 2019 smash hit 'Wicked' which broke records at the Victorian Music Theatre Guild Awards.
Co-founder of Tribe Youth Theatre and BTC committee and general member Kristen Beever said seeing Abe leave was sad but necessary.
"It's bittersweet but Abe's career path is on a very steep trajectory and the big city is calling him and their gain is our loss," she said.
"He has been a member for 17 years and at the age of 25 that is quite the achievement and I am sure it's one that won't be repeated anytime soon.
"He has given everything he has to BTC and I am sure he will be a big superstar one day.
"His roots are in Bendigo but his future is global."
Abe has also been recognised for his hard work at the company last Tuesday when he was announced as a BTC Life Member.
