The $200,000 project, part of the Healthy Heart of Victoria initiative, was opened by Greater Bendigo mayor Jennifer Alden on Wednesday.
It includes a boardwalk and connecting concrete path to encourage local residents to be more active, more often.
After results from the 2019 Active Living Census highlighted walking was the most popular physical activity within Kangaroo Flat and Greater Bendigo, it was hoped the new infrastructure would help provide a greater connection around the lake and with the Bendigo Creek Linear Trail.
City of Greater Bendigo health and wellbeing director Vicky Mason said the city was excited to see the new boardwalk and path now available.
"The Kangaroo Flat community told us that they wanted the area around Gateway Park to be more accessible for physical activity and active travel," she said.
"We're pleased to be able provide them with these important upgrades that were highlighted within the precinct master plan."
Ms Mason said as part of the boardwalk, 2000 new plants would also be planted to regenerate the area and create an enjoyable natural walking and cycling experience.
Other news:
"In addition, Healthy Heart of Victoria has also supported the installation of other infrastructure in the Kangaroo Flat area such as outdoor fitness equipment, solar lighting, new seating and other path connections to help the local community to be more active," she said.
The initiative is also hosting a series of free exercise sessions with qualified instructors at the Kangaroo Flat outdoor fitness equipment for three weeks from May 17 to encourage people to be active in outdoor recreation spaces.
