Authorities are warning people in the East Loddon district to keep their animals away from water affected by a blue-green algae outbreak.

Goulburn-Murray Water said monitoring had detected high levels of the potentially toxic algae.
"It is recommended that alternative supplies for stock drinking be used," G-MW said on its website.
"Stock and pets should be kept away from the water. Watering of edible garden plants should be avoided."
There is a similar alert in place for all Loddon Valley Irrigation Area channels east of the Loddon River.

"Landowners are recommended to find an alternative supply for domestic and stock," G-MW said.
"Alternative supply options include dam water, bore water, tank water or purchasing water from a water carter.
"If there is a cost for obtaining an alternative source of water, this is at the water user's expense.
"If you do not have access to alternate water supply, GMW advises you to keep a close watch on the health of your animals."
A blue-green algae alert remains in place at Lake Eppalock, east of Bendigo, but a warning was recently lifted for the Tullaroop Reservoir at Carisbrook.
