WHAT was meant to be the start of a grand final week training session on Tuesday night ended with Huntly-North Epsom players pondering what could have been over a couple of beers.
The Power players were just about to begin their Tuesday net session at Strauch Reserve when they learned their upcoming grand final this weekend against Strathdale-Maristians had been cancelled by the BDCA.
The BDCA adhered to the advice of Cricket Australia to cancel this weekend's senior and junior grand finals due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This weekend was to have been the Power's second grand final in a row after defeating Golden Square in last year's flag battle.
"We got the news right on training time... we were there and ready to go and it was obviously a hollow feeling, which would be the same for both teams," Power captain Elliott Massina said on Wednesday.
"I guess there's no real closure to the season and it's just a hollow situation.
"Once we got the news we folded the covers up, put the roller away and sat around and had a couple of beers, reflected on the year and tried to make the best of a bad situation."
While all grand finals have been cancelled, the BDCA still has a decision to make on determining who will be awarded premierships given the unprecedented nature of the cause of the cancellation for health reasons.
Under BDCA rules, the highest ranked team is declared the premier if the grand final is abandoned because of wet weather.
A scenario such as a pandemic is not covered in the rules.

The Power finished second on the ladder, one point behind the Suns, with the two sides the clear standouts of the competition.
The BDCA will meet on Thursday night to determine the premiership outcome.
"It's a delicate decision and I wish Walshy (president Wayne Walsh) and the board all the best with it," Massina said.
"With there being one point between us and them winning the one-day final and us the Twenty20 final, I guess we were the two standout sides for the season, so it would be nice to have some form of recognition for that. But it's a completely unprecedented situation that is obviously different to a result being affected by weather."
