A sculpture, about 10 metres long by 4.5 metres wide, was installed on the roof of the gallery's 2015 wing this afternoon.
Named 'Elemental Desires', the piece was inspired by Bendigo's rich history.
It was created by artist Michaela Gleave and features LED lights on a steel scaffold, illuminating the words 'Elemental Desires'.
Expect to see the words bathed in colour, from golden yellow to deep red and back again.
Much of the installation was done today, with the help of a crane. Finishing touches are scheduled for tomorrow.
The sculpture was intended to consider the city's layered history, starting with the historical and cultural climate of the 1850s.
References included the gold rush and frontier wars, the importance of migrant communities and increased travel, the contemporary legacy of mining and ongoing tensions of cultural diversity.
