DOG attacks on livestock have led Mount Alexander Shire Council to call on owners to make sure pets are unable to roam.
Several "distressed" farmers have contacted the council after livestock has been attacked and killed by dogs in the last two months, coordinator of community safety and amenity Jeffry Amy said.
"A farming family lost a significant proportion of their mob in one night, " he said.
"It was incredibly upsetting for them to see their sheep fatally injured and killed in such a brutal way".
The attacks occurred around Walmer and Metcalfe.
Attacks on livestock may result in court action, seizure of the dog or the dog being put down, Mr Amy said.
Owners may be held responsible for the cost of stock losses.
