Police have urged residents to be wary of an unofficial salesman door-knocking in the Bendigo area.
Sergeant Robert Walsh said the man spoke to residents at Forest Street, Bendigo on Tuesday morning.
The man claimed to be working for the government's light globe scheme, but had no official lanyard or clipboard.
"When they start asking questions about neighbours, including their ages, if they were retired, and what their phone numbers are, it sounds pretty dodgy to me," Sergeant Walsh said.
"Sometimes they're legitimate and people don't realise it, but it doesn't seem that way with this one."
Sergeant Walsh said it was important for residents to check the identification and credentials of any door-knockers.
Anyone who notices suspicious behaviour or has information about the salesman should contact the Bendigo Police Station on 5448 1300.
