THE BOMB squad has determined the item found in a Castlemaine vehicle was not an explosive device.
Emergency services were called to the vehicle in a parking lot at a William Street address about 9.40pm on Thursday.
The bomb squad were called from Melbourne to investigate.
"The bomb response team examined the device and determined it to be a hoax device," Castlemaine Sergeant Peter Lukaitis said.
"There is no danger to the community."
The bomb squad left the scene in the early hours of Friday morning.
Police are making further inquiries in relation to the incident.
Sergeant Lukaitis has urged anyone with information to contact the Castlemaine Police Station on 5470 4100 or CrimeStoppers on 1300 333 000.
Thursday, 11pm
THE BOMB squad is on its way to Castlemaine after a suspected explosive device was discovered in a vehicle.
Emergency services managing the scene and police are door-knocking nearby properties.
The vehicle of interest is believed to be in a parking lot at a William Street address.
Emergency services were notified about 9.40pm and have been conducting investigations.
Police at the scene will be keeping affected persons briefed into the evening.
