The fire danger rating is very high in all parts of the state except the Central District, where it is severe.
No fires can be lit or be allowed to remain alight in the open air from 12:01am - 11:59pm on Sunday.
A total fire ban is already in place in the South West district, which includes the southern Grampians.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Tom Delamotte said very hot temperatures were forecast to continue for the rest of the weekend without much relief from the heat overnight.
"This means that if we have fires in the landscape they could challenge firefighters," he said.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s in the top half of the state.
“This is the hottest start to autumn in 30 years, following the hottest summer on record," Mr Delamotte said.
State Response Controller David Bruce said it was important everyone remained vigilant and complied with the Total Fire Ban.
“There are 40 going fires in Victoria including the 20 new fires started from lightning last night, and the fire risk continues as we are expecting more thunderstorms with dry lightning later today," Mr Bruce said.
"People need to ensure they are prepared.
“Stay aware of your surroundings and if you’re travelling or in unfamiliar places, make sure you are aware of the local risk. Know how to stay informed and never rely on one source for emergency information.”
He urged people to look after themselves in the heat.
"Drink plenty of water and check in on others," Mr Bruce said.
"Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.”
The temperature in Bendigo are expected to peak at 37 degrees tomorrow.
Echuca is forecast to reach a top of 38. Maryborough's maximum temperature is expected to be 36, while Castlemaine's is 35.
Kyneton is predicted to reach a maximum of 33.
