One thing’s for sure: as the weather warms up animals are on the move, and are more likely to come into contact with people.
Wildlife rescuers say there’s a few simple things we can do to keep them safe.
In central Victoria rescuers say they have begun to get more and more calls to rescue animals in distress, or inside people’s homes.
Wildlife Rescue and Information Network volunteer Kathy Campbell said warm conditions in late spring mean the service is always busy responding to calls.
Slowing down on the roads is an important way people can keep animals safe, Ms Campbell said.
As the paddocks dry out many mammals come up to eat on the grassy verges, while reptiles love to sun themselves on the road.
The jumble of hot and cold days in Bendigo recently has also been hard on the health of vulnerable animals, especially birds, Ms Campbell said.
As conditions dry, it can be hard for animals to find water.
To give them a break Ms Campbell has urged people to leave out shallow bowls of water for animals to sip.
