The Bendigo Youth Council will be appointed in December and hold its first meeting in February, reporting to the mayor and councillors on plans and programs, and pitching their own ideas to make Bendigo a better place to live for young people.
There will be up to 18 positions on the council.
Youth matters in Bendigo:
Mayor Margaret O’Rourke said the formation of a Youth Council was a key action from the council’s Youth Strategy launched earlier this year.
“Young people are the future of our community and the formation of a Youth Council will provide them with the opportunity to learn about local government and to voice their opinions to create change,” she said.
“There is approximately 18,700 young people currently living in Greater Bendigo and this number is expected to rise to 25,900 by 2036.
“The Youth Council will be representative of young people and encourage diversity in membership.
“It’s a great opportunity for young people who want a stronger voice in our community to meet others with similar interests and ideas, build their leadership skills and develop the knowledge and abilities to affect change.”
The City of Greater Bendigo has held annual youth summits in the past.
Applications are open until November 30, appointments will be made in December, inductions will be held in January and the Youth Council will begin meeting from February.
