Bendigo District Table Tennis Association president and competition referee Gary Warnest was impressed with the level of determination within the players.
“During earlier rounds we try and ensure the best teams don’t play each other, so generally you will see the stronger teams go up against the weaker teams,” Warnest said.
“However, sometimes the stronger teams will acknowledge this and they tend to take their foot off the pedal a little bit.
“But so far we’ve seen matches with final results of 11-0 and 10-1, the teams are going for it.”
Warnest said they’re taking the games “very seriously”.
“At the end of this competition are the bragging rights, it’s not the money people find important, it’s the bragging rights,” Warnest laughed.
Days one, two, three, four and five of the competition involves Australian state and New Zealand based teams before individual match play commences on Thursday, day 6.
Warnest said it was unfortunate that no Bendigo players qualified to compete in the state team.
However, come Thursday there will be five players across multiple age groups from Bendigo taking to the table to compete in the individual matches.
