Diane James was announced in the role on Tuesday following the sudden departure of former GMW chair Joanne Anderson.
GMW is undergoing a transformation by 2020 based on recommendations from a strategic advisory panel, including reducing operating and capital costs, and more transparent financial reporting.
Improving engagement with the community is also a priority.
Ms James was the chair of Southern Rural Water, where she oversaw upgrades to the Werribee, Bacchus Marsh and Macalister irrigation districts.
Victorian water minister Lisa Neville said Ms James was a “strong leader” and was ideally placed to lead GMW into the future.
“The key priority I have set for Dianne is to ensure we have a financially viable and affordable business that can meet the needs of the region and irrigators,” she said.
