A WRITER, an advocate for people with disability and a proud Eaglehawk resident are among the 891 people named in the Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honour List.
The central Victorians will join the company of almost 50,000 men and women recognised throughout the years for their outstanding contributions to communities, and people’s lives.
Local recipients include Bendigo’s Daniel Giles, an advocate for people with disability; Eaglehawk’s Aylene Kirkwood, for her services to the community; and Castlemaine playwright and screenwriter John Romeril.
They will formally receive the insignia of their appointment or award in the coming months.
Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove said Australia was a “stronger, safer and more caring nation” because of their commitment.
“For over 40 years these honours have helped to define, encourage and reinforce our national aspirations and ideals by acknowledging exceptional Australians,” Governor-General and Chancellor of the Order of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove, said.
“Today, we add a new group of names to those we should all admire.”
High-profile names on this year’s list include Cate Blanchett, Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle, lawyer Julian McMahon and fashion designer Collette Dinnigan.
Council of the Order of Australia chairman, Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston, encouraged people to nominate citizens who had made outstanding contributions to the wellbeing of others for national recognition on the honours list.
