CASTLEMAINE writer John Romeril will be made a member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the performing arts, to theatre companies and education.
The addition to the Queen’s Birthday 2017 Honour’s List will be one of a number of accolades bestowed on the playwright and screenwriter for the work he has produced during his more than 70 years, including the Patrick White Award in 2008, and the inaugural Australian National Playwrights’ Centre Award in 2003.
The Playwriting Australia chairman has written more than 80 plays, including I Don’t Know Who to Feel Sorry For, The Floating World and Chicago, Chicago.
More recent project include the short film One Night The Moon, and theatre piece Jack Charles versus The Crown.
Romeril’s career includes a number of playwright-in-residence positions at theatre companies and tertiary institutions, from Hobart’s Salamanca Theatre Company to La Mama Theatre Company in Melbourne.
