A $31 million redevelopment of Lansell Plaza is set to increase the shopping centre’s total floor space by 5200 square metres.
The plans, currently before City of Greater Bendigo for approval, include the demolition of the Coles supermarket which would be rebuilt with a 1700 square metre expansion.
The existing Woolworths would also receive a 1200 square metre expansion, if the plans are approved.
City of Greater Bendigo’s manager of strategy Nick Byrne said owners Charter Hall Retail planned to increase the retail and medical floor space and add 226 extra car parks as well.
“Plans include refurbishing and modernising the facade and putting in a few extra stores. The proposal is to reconfigure the car park, put in some extra landscaping and aim to improve the pedestrian connectivity through the space,” he said.
Mr Byrne said the plans were out for public comment until Friday, September 7.
“Subject to submissions and further assessment by council officers it will progress to a council meeting.” Mr Byrne said the application was “generally in accordance with the Kangaroo Flat South Structure Plan”, which covers Lansell Plaza and the wider retail precinct.
“It’s a good investment in an existing activity centre,” he said.
“But it will be subject to further assessment to make sure it meets the standards.”
Charter Hall Retail bought Lansell Plaza from the Centro Group for $32.5 million in January.
When contacted by the Bendigo Advertiser about the plans yesterday, a Charter Hall spokeswoman declined to discuss details of the group’s plans while they were still before the council, but instead issued a short statement.
“We are looking to redevelop Lansell Plaza to provide an enhanced retail centre with new and improved facilities for the community and our retailers,” she said.
“As we are currently in the planning phase, with our development application before council, it is too early to comment on the details of the redevelopment plans.
“We look forward to being able to provide a full update on the redevelopment over the coming weeks.”
