Charter Hall Retail shows great confidence in our city by committing to such a significant investment – at a time when many are uncertain about the future of retail.
But what is perhaps more welcome is the facelift itself.
The $31 million proposed redevelopment would increase the shopping centre’s total floor space by 5200 square metres. Existing shops would be refurbished and modernised, and new shops introduced.
Lansell Plaza services a large catchment – including several of Bendigo’s growing suburbs such as nearby Maiden Gully and Big Hill.
It has long needed a fresh new look to ensure people living on the southern end of our city continue to shop locally rather than go elsewhere.
The centre is getting tired – and shoppers need a new experience that is inviting and enticing.
Should the redevelopment be approved, the extra stores need to be given careful consideration to ensure they offer a point of difference and reason for consumers to return.
Lansell Plaza was once Bendigo’s showpiece for late night and weekend shopping.
There is no doubt competition has been tough since the Bendigo Marketplace opened its doors – but in a city this size, both should be thriving.
Let’s hope this again becomes the case for the Kangaroo Flat precinct.
