WEATHER
Partly cloudy. Areas of smoke haze. A shower or two from the late morning. Winds south to southeasterly and light tending east to southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the late afternoon.
A top of 29 degrees.
Fire update
Fires are still burning across the state but all have downgraded to ‘watch and act’ and ‘advice’. Hopefully today's rain will help the situation.
Qantas
Qantas boss Alan Joyce last night said government policy will "have to change" to guarantee the airline's role as Australia's national carrier.
In a speech to the Tourism and Transport Forum on Wednesday night in Canberra, Joyce said: "The Qantas Sale Act limits our financial options, it adds cost to our business, and it influences our actions as a publicly listed company."
There are reports Qantas is lobbying the Government to offer a public guarantee of its debt to secure its credit rating.
Sochi Games
Torah Bright has won Australia's first medal of the Sochi Games, picking up silver in the ladies' halfpipe final on Thursday morning (AEDT).
"I feel great. I feel like I won!," she told Channel Ten.
"Tonight was really difficult. Perhaps like one of the hardest contests I have done in a while.
"So I'm so happy it is over and I am so happy I put a run down. I am grateful to be here."
Congratulations, Torah.
TRAINS
The Bendigo to Southern Cross train service is running once more, after the past few days have seen the service operating as a coach.
But the line is experiencing slight delays, due to a track fault at Sunshine. A V/Line spokesman said trains were now about 10 minutes late but would catch up throughout the day.
Check the V/Line website for more information.
