Built at a cost of $700,000, the site is open 24 hours a day with CCTV surveillance, space for 100 people, better lighting and seating and WiFi access.
It will also service the Salvation Army’s Chill Out Space which supports party-goers each Saturday night.
Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder said the site was sheltered against all weather conditions.
“The new taxi rank facilities are first class, with better lighting and more seating,” he said.
“It will be safer and easier to get a taxi any time, particularly late at night.”
Member for Northern Victoria Damian Drum said the taxi rank would also support key attractions like the Bendigo Art Gallery and Capital Theatre.
Bendigo Mayor Lisa Ruffell said the facility had been welcomed by nightclub owners and security staff.
“The response from security staff and night club owners has been very positive, and they are looking forward to the space acting as a safe, illuminated hub for people waiting to get home late at night,” she said.
“The WiFi hotspot will provide access to communications platforms like Twitter and Facebook, allowing people to stay connected.
“It will also help enhance safety, especially for people late at night, and may lead to the development of an innovative application to help manage the space’s future transport needs.”
