Chilling out on a Saturday night will take on a new meaning when the Bendigo Safe Community Forum and the Salvation Army Bendigo launch the Bendigo Chill out Space on Friday.A pilot project since December last year, the Bendigo Chill out Space is run by six volunteers. Bendigo Safe Community Forum chairman Martyn Scrimshaw said despite only being operational for a short period of time, the feedback received had been extremely positive. Mr Scrimshaw came across the idea at a safe community forum held last year. After hearing initial plans for a Chill out Space, he offered up his mobile reachout vehicle. The van not only provided a safe presence for partygoers in Bendigo, but volunteers also handed out water, Milo, tea, coffee and thongs to people waiting in the taxi line, Mr Scrimshaw said. “We would certainly see between 100-150 people through the van on a Saturday night.’’Mr Scrimshaw said many people had jumped on board since the project began – Ansell had provided condoms, Bendigo nightclub owners had helped to provide water and Roadsafe had provided a breathalyser. The biggest surprise came at Christmas – a donation of $3000 from Bendigo business Wild Plumbing. The Bendigo Chill out Space is open from 11pm-4am on Saturday nights.
