Footage of the attempted armed robbery has been released by police who are appealing for public assistance to identify the man.
The unknown man is seen entering the general store on Duncans Rd in Werribee South, south-west of Melbourne, about 2pm on April 15.
With a hood pulled up and his face covered, the man is seen holding the tyre iron in one hand, and gesturing toward the cash register with the other.
"Officers have been told the offender made demands for cash but the 63-year-old shopkeeper declined and chased the man out of his store," a police spokesperson said.
"The offender fled empty-handed and was last seen travelling in a white Toyota Camry with no registration plates," police said.
