THE City of Greater Bendigo has “agreed in principle” to have boom gates installed at the CBD car park where a female kangaroo is believed to have been mutilated on Friday night.
Director of planning and development Prue Mansfield said Coles representatives approached the council late last year about placing boom gates at the second floor of the supermarket’s council-owned car park to restrict entry at night.
“The incident was absolutely awful and it’s hard to imagine why anyone would want to do such a thing,” Ms Mansfield said.
“Coles approached us to put boom gates in late last year following some bad behaviour there (at the car park),”
“We agreed to do that. We are just awaiting on plans on what they are proposing.”
Ms Mansfield said there was “clearly no car parking need” on the second floor at night.
“The council needs to adjust things as issues emerge and as the behaviour of residents changes.”
Senior Sergeant Craig Gaffee confirmed that Bendigo police were investigating Friday night’s incident.
“Firstly we’re looking at how the kangaroo came to be injured and deceased in the first place and how those injuries occurred, as well as how it ended up in the shopping centre,” Senior Sergeant Gaffee said.
“We’ve got a couple of lines of inquiry to follow up and hopefully we will be able to locate the persons responsible for it.”
“It’s difficult for police in any investigation where there are no eyewitnesses.
“These things only get solved with the help of the community providing us with information on the incident or offenders.”
The Bendigo Advertiser contacted Coles but staff at the Bendigo store were unable to comment on the matter.
Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Bendigo police on 5448 1300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
