Bendigo Y Service Club book committee chairman Peter Searle said it was an amazing sight.
“We ended up giving them Easter eggs,” he laughed.
Some 40,000 books were expected to be sold over the Easter weekend.
All of the money raised from the sale will be given to regional organisations including the YMCA and the CFA.
The annual book fair is one of the highlights of the Easter weekend for some locals.
Bendigo resident Heather Day said it was a tradition for her to go to the fair each year. “I wouldn’t miss it,” she said.
Ms Day said she expected to buy many books at the weekend.
“We usually donate a lot of the books... but I like to read books that have Irish authors,” she said.
The book sale will continue today with plenty of stock available.
There are books suited to all ages as well as magazines, records, CDs, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles.
The book sale will be on from 9am to 1pm at the YMCA Stadium, Mundy Street, Bendigo.
Admission is free.
