The Bendigo trainer and driver team produced Parisian Artiste to win the Vicbred Super Series 3YO Trotters Colts and Geldings Final.
Betting markets suggested it was a two-horse battle and that's the way it planned out, with Parisian Artiste outstaying Aldebaran Zeus to win by five metres, with a 25-metre gap back to third.
Parisian Artiste's win capped an amazing run for Ashwood and French, who had five winners in the final seven days of 2021.
"We're still on cloud nine,'' Ashwood said on Sunday.
"It just makes you want to get up and keep working hard, so that you can get a couple more good horses and win some more big races."
Ashwood was full of praise for 24-year-old French, who won her maiden Group One race on her favourite horse.
"Tayla has done a lot of work with this horse, so it meant the world to her,'' Ashwood said.
"He's just such a cool little dude,'' French said after the race.
"He's got his quirks and I've learnt to go with him. I respect him and he respects me back.
French sat in the death seat outside of Aldebaran Zeus and finished off the race strongly.

"I was confident from the 500m in because I knew our horse would keep staying and running all day long,'' Ashwood said.
"Zeus is a high-quality horse with high speed. I thought their best chance of beating us was letting us go, so when we were parked outside him I thought it would make our chances better because he's just so tough.
"He has great stamina and a great will to win."
Parisian Artiste has won eight of his 27 career starts and Friday night's first prize of $50,000 took his career earnings to more than $108,000.
"He'll go out to the paddock for three or four weeks and then we'll reassess from there,'' Ashwood said.
"He'll probably have a light season next season and we'll just focus on the age group races."
