A HUNTLY driver who was caught travelling more than 50 kilometres over the speed limit has avoided a conviction.

The 25-year-old appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to the speeding charge.
The court heard about 9.25pm on May 11 this year, police intercepted the man driving his Holden Commodore along Powells Avenue in Strathdale.
The 25-year-old was travelling about 114km/h in a 60km/h zone.

His car was immediately impounded. The man told police he was speeding because he had a fight with his girlfriend.
The court heard the man had no prior convictions.
The man, who represented himself in court, told the magistrate he knew it was a stupid decision to get behind the wheel.
He said he could not remember what the fight was over but that he had just jumped in his car and taken off.
Magistrate Trieu Huynh said the speed was extremely fast and incredibly dangerous.
Mr Huynh said he hoped the man had learnt his lesson and would not reoffend.
The 25-year-old was fined $750 without conviction. His licence was also cancelled and he was disqualified from driving for 12 months.
