Professor Milne was invited to host a public lecture at La Trobe University by senior lecturer Ruth Williams.
About 100 students turned out to listen to the academic’s take on the global financial crisis and what it took to forge a career in economics. “You need a good training in microeconomics, econometrics and finance at university,” he said.
Professor Milne said a high level of maths and logistics and an interest in history, as well as national and international politics, were essential.
“You need a broader outlook on life to make it interesting and satisfying,” he said.
The former Bendigo High School – now Bendigo Senior Secondary College – student also dropped by his former school to speak to budding financial experts in grades 11 and 12.
While at the school, Professor Milne met with a number of “old classmates” and members of the BSSC Alumni Association over afternoon tea.
Professor Milne graduated from Bendigo High School in 1964 before undertaking further study at Monash University in Melbourne and the Australian National University in Canberra.
Professor Milne said he returned to Bendigo once a year to visit family and to see his 97-year-old mother, who lives locally.
He is currently acting BMO Professor of Economics and Finance at the Queen’s University and Queen’s School of Business in Ontario, Canada.
The published author and former federal government consultant has spoken at a number of universities across the world, including Stanford University, University of Chicago and New York University.
