The 20-year-old competes for South Bendigo Athletics Club and used the 12 1/2 lap track duel as part of his warm-up for this Sunday's half-marathon (21.1km) at the Nike-backed Melbourne Marathon Festival.
Reid clocked a time of 14:35.73 as St Stephens athlete Thomas Thorpe broke the 14-minute barrier on his way to victory in 13:58.49.
Runner-up was Western Athletics' Liam Cashin, 14:01.01; as Glenhuntly's Edward Marks was third in 14:08.35.
It was a dramatic improvement by Reid who ran 14:59 in the Bendigo Harriers and City of Greater Bendigo-run 5km Frenzy held at Flora Hill last January. Bendigo Centre's under-18 record of 15:10 for 5000m was set by Archie Reid in January, 2019.
Tuesday night's racing at Lakeside included several graded and under-20 championships. Bendigo University's Russell Jenkins ran 18:22.52 in C-grade.
Meanwhile, University Pride was to the fore in the latest round of the A.L. Parker Electrical-backed Tuesday Night Series for athletes at the Flora Hill track.
All but five of the competitors at the Bendigo Regional Athletics Complex in Retreat Road were in the University colours.
The in-form Hugh Casey marked back-to-back wins in the 3000m as he raced to the line in 11:30.45 ahead of clubmates David Cripps, 11:57.09, and Ben McDermid, 12:50.63.
First three in the 1000m were Uni clubmates Jonty McDermid, 3:50.63; April Wainwright, 4:05.88; and Braxton Safstrom, 4:38.34.
Athletes from eight-years-old up to 60 ran in the windy conditions.
