MOAMA has wasted no time showing it will be a force to be reckoned with in Bendigo premier division lawn bowls this season.
The competition new-comers inflicted a 27-shot defeat on last season's runners-up, Kangaroo Flat, as the 2021-22 season finally got under way on Saturday after being delayed by more than a month due to COVID restrictions.
There was plenty of support on the sidelines for Moama as it triumphed 84-57 at Kangaroo Flat and won three of the four rinks.
"It was a really good day for the club; everyone played well and we got the result we wanted," Moama skipper Kevin Anderson said.
"We couldn't have asked for a better start; to go up there and win in the manner we did was really good. Our leads set us up really well and we just kept going from there.
"We were unsure what was going to happen being our first game in a new competition, but we all dug in as a team and had great support... there was about 45 members who came up from Moama to watch us."
* Eaglehawk couldn't have asked for a better start to its season, crushing reigning premier South Bendigo with an all-rinks-up 88-53 win.
"To get the 18 points and win with that many shots up, it's exactly the start we were looking for," Hawks skipper Dean Carter said.
"There was a good vibe around the club right from the roll-up and it continued all throughout the day."
All four Eaglehawk rinks won by at least six shots in the whitewash that has the Hawks the first team for the season to sit on top of the ladder.
It's the second season in a row South Bendigo has begun its premiership defence losing all four rinks in round one after the same happened against Kangaroo Flat last year before the Diggers went on to win back-to-back flags.
* Castlemaine got its season off to a flyer with a commanding 27-shot win at home over Bendigo East.
The Maine had three rinks up in their 90-63 belting of the Beasties, who they also comfortably beat by 16 shots in the final round last season.
"Without being cocky, we were reasonably confident we could get the job done at home," Castlemaine skipper Rod Phillips said.
"Having said that, we certainly weren't under-estimating Bendigo East when they've got players of the calibre of Aaron Tomkins, Greg Podesta and Ian Ross... they are a tough side."
The two key results that gave the ascendancy to the Maine was Phillips' 24-12 win over new East coach and former Castlemaine skipper Greg Podesta and Peter Brain defeating Paul Vlaeminck 30-12.
* In the only game of the opening round decided by under 27 shots, Golden Square beat Bendigo 70-65 at home, with the rinks split two apiece.
