BISHOP Les’ smile said it all – his installation as the seventh bishop of Sandhurst was a beautiful celebration and a new beginning for the diocese. And he was grateful for every moment.Yesterday’s occasion was complete with the pomp and ceremony you would expect of such an affair, and attended by more than 120 priests and bishops from across the country. But it was also so much more than a formality. The installation was the result of a massive community effort led by the ever-inspiring Monsignor Frank Marriott – and an absolute credit to those involved.Catholic College Bendigo students should be congratulated for the outstanding way they represented their school, as should each of the student leaders from catholic primary and secondary schools across the diocese. It was encouraging to see so many young people actively involved with their local community and part of such a significant, historic event. It was also heartwarming to see so many people coming together for a joyous event.Bishop Les raised the challenges of the church during his homily, noting there was a push for religion to be sidelined as a private matter for individuals.Yesterday, however, he would have been pleased to see so many people come together to celebrate their faith, a new leader – and a leader who seems to have already won over their hearts.Welcome, Bishop Les. Your smile has already brought smiles to many others and may that continue.
