Bendigo's premier professional golfer finished the opening round at the Country Club of Jackson with a three-under par scorecard thanks to the trifecta on holes four, five and six.
Herbert started the day on the back nine, which he finished at even par after shooting seven pars, one birdie and a single bogey.
His momentum remained the same after the first three holes on the front nine, but that all changed by the time the 25-year-old Neangar Park product reached the par-three fourth.
Herbert crafted a birdie after sending his tee shot left of the green, but put an accurate chip back onto the putting surface went straight into the hole to reignite his round.
On the par-five fifth a wayward tee shot to the right of the fairway left Herbert with no other option but to play it safe with a recovery back to the middle, he was then able to plant his approach shot to within seven feet which he then rolled in to move to two-under.
Off the tee on the par-four sixth Herbert's tee shot landed just left of the fairway, but once again he weaved some magic on the approach to get back onto the green.
With his putter running hot, he then drained a long-range putt to secure the trifecta of birdies.
He made par on the remaining three holes to finish the day at three-under 69.
He returns to action on day two and will tee up at 5.01AM AEST on Saturday morning.
