Richard Pickett, 54, appeared in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court last week where he pleaded guilty to charges of intentionally causing serious injury and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
The court heard on the afternoon of June 12, Pickett was on a Bendigo bus with his housemate.
Another associate told Pickett that the housemate had been "messing around" with Pickett's girlfriend so the 54-year-old became aggressive.
Pickett called his housemate a dog before pulling a pair of scissors out of his backpack.
The 54-year-old elbowed the man to the upper body before striking the victim to the face with the blade of the scissors.
The victim sustained a small cut to his left eyebrow as a result of the attack.
The court heard Pickett was on bail at the time of the offending.
Defence lawyer Bethany East told the court Pickett was an Aboriginal man who grew up around disadvantage, abuse, and dysfunction.

Ms East said Pickett turned to alcohol as a child and despite a period of sobriety, the 54-year-old relapsed in 2012.
The defence lawyer said the alcohol abuse and poor mental health lead to Pickett's offending.
Ms East said her client had already spent 97 days in custody but she conceded a further period of jail was an appropriate sentence.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan said Pickett was lucky he only inflicted a "relatively modest" cut to the victim's eyebrow.
Mr Coghlan convicted and jailed Pickett for five months, with 97 days reckoned as already served.
