Division one top three teams Eaglehawk, Strathdale and Tatura all collected a crucial three points to widen the gap to the rest of the competition.
With the league playing three rounds in seven days this week to make-up for lost matches during lockdown, the pressure is on the teams at the top of the championship not to drop points.
Two goals in the opening 16 minutes was enough for Strathdale to defeat Spring Gully United 2-0 at Beischer Park.
Striker Kane Goldsworthy found the back of the net in the seventh minute before Daniel Purdy doubled the Blues' lead from the penalty spot in the 16th minute.
"We had other chances to score, but credit to Spring Gully they defended really well,'' Strathdale coach Jon Bryers said.
"We had an eye on the rest of the week with a quick back-up, so we managed a few players in the second half rather than push forward and score more goals.
"We don't know what tomorrow is going to bring, so our mindset is about enjoying the rest of the season. We just don't know what's going to happen.
"It's about enjoying every game we play."
The Blues remain five points behind top side Eaglehawk after the Borough outclassed Epsom 5-1 at Truscott Reserve.
To rub salt into Epsom's wounds, four of the Hawks' five goals were scored by former Scorpions' players.
Three were scored by Daniel Bell, who celebrated his first hat-trick at senior level.
Former Epsom captain Alex Caldow also found the back of the net, while the home side's fifth goal came from the boot of Jesse Parker.
Epsom's sole goal was scored by James Crawley.
"It wasn't our best performance of the season,'' Eaglehawk coach Keegan Smyth said.
"I thought we started well, but wasted a few chances and then Epsom grew into the game.
"It always felt like one of those games where we were going to create enough chances, but it was a matter of converting those chances and getting the three points.
"Considering we were able to rest a couple of players with the rest of the week in mind, I was happy to walk away with the three points."
Third-placed Tatura put 10 goals past Golden City at Shadforth Park.
The highlight was a hat-trick to Cody Sellwood, who has scored an equal league-best 15 goals for the season.
Coach Tristan Zito and midfielder Jordan Leocata scored a brace each for the Ibises.
"It was a good win,'' Zito said.
"We started really well and kept plugging away. We play Shepparton South on Wednesday and then have the weekend off, so it was an important game for us.
"Eaglehawk and Strathdale are the two teams we need to knock off, so we need to keep playing well and anything can happen in the finals."
Shepparton South moved into fourth place on the table after defeating arch-rival Shepparton United 3-1.
Two goals from star striker Joel Aitken and one from 16-year-old rookie Nick Mori saw South home in the Shepparton derby.
United's goal came via influential midfielder Roven Shaholli, who was playing just his second game for the season.
Six clubs now turn their attention to a set of midweek matches on Wednesday night.
Eaglehawk hosts Golden City at Truscott Reserve, Shepparton South is home to Tatura and Strathdale travels to Epsom. All games are scheduled to kick-off at 7pm.
WOMEN
Spring Gully United scored arguably its best win of the season to consolidate its position in the women's top three.
The Reds came from behind twice to defeat Strathdale 4-2 at Beischer Park.
After a tight first 40 minutes of the game, Strathdale opened the scoring thanks to a penalty from Bridget Chamberlain.
The lead didn't last long with the Reds awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time. Amanda Sgarioto made no mistake from the spot to level the scores.
Four minutes into the second half Strathdale regained the lead after Caitlin Robertson found the back of the net.
Once again the Reds responded quickly. This time a Pearl Stevens' strike levelled the scores.
The Reds continued to pile on the pressure and they were rewarded in the 74th minute when Stevens scored her second goal.
Five minutes later the Reds sealed the three points when young gun Frances Leach scored for the 16th time this season.
"It was a close first-half, but we probably had a bit more firepower,'' Spring Gully coach Simon Smith said.
"It was always going to be a tough game. The most pleasing thing for us was the way we came back twice against a good side like Strathdale.
"Pearl Stevens was immense for us. She beat four players and scored a goal.
"It looked like we wanted it more, which really pleased me."
Strathfieldsaye Colts United remains in second spot - one point ahead of Spring Gully - after scoring a 5-2 win over Eaglehawk at Truscott Reserve.
Colts have won nine games in a row to set up a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash with La Trobe Uni next Sunday.
La Trobe is now only two points in front of Colts after its match with Moama-Echuca on Sunday was postponed because eight of the Raiders' players live over the NSW border and aren't allowed to travel into Victoria because of COVID restrictions.
La Trobe now has a game in hand on its rivals.
At the other end of the table, Epsom and Tatura celebrate their second wins of the season.
The Scorpions defeated Swan Hill 4-0 on the back of a brace from Liz Graco and single goals to Jemma Duncan and Jayde Snell.
Tatura edged out Golden City 2-1 at Shadforth Park thanks to two goals from Gabriela Posteraro.
Caitlin Laing scored for the Rams.
The Shepparton derby between United and South was a thrilling 2-2 draw.
All four goals were scored in the first 40 minutes of the match.
United took a 2-0 lead after goals from Maria Villani and an own goal. South bounced back with goals to Alicia Rowan and Elisha Antunov.
No midweek matches will be played in the women's championship this week.
