That's why the couple will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on August 9.
Mr Holmes said he "just knew" his future bride was someone he wanted in his life.
"I just decided I wanted to know her," he said.
"We were at the dance and I just knew."
Mrs Holmes said the pair would often spend time at her family's home, talking and getting to know each other for hours.
More stories:
"Ted's parents had passed away when he was young, so he spent a lot of time at our place and we would sit out the back on bags of potatoes and just chat the night away," she said.
The couple were together for five years before they married at Bendigo's St Paul's Cathedral on August 9, 1951.
From there, the couple lived with Ms Holmes' parents until they were able to afford a home in North Bendigo and began creating their most treasured memories.
"We welcomed our three children Doug, Julie and Jeffrey who have since gone on to add to our wonderful family with kids of their own," she said
"Ted was a painter and after he had a fall at work when he was 48-years-old, we wanted to do our part and help raise our family.
"We would often look after our grandkids and great-grandkids for as long as we could, but we're getting older now.
"They've definitely kept us young though, that's for sure."
Daughter Julie Rooke said her parents were "devoted to their family".
"They've just done so much for us and we couldn't thank them more for it," she said.
The couple now resides in their home in White Hills and still get frequent visits from various family members.
When asked what advice they had for young couples, Mr Holmes said everything could be fixed.
"Some couples just need to try a bit harder," he said.
"We've had our challenges along the way, but nothing we couldn't work through."
Mrs Holmes agreed.
"We never go to bed angry anymore," she said.
"I always make sure I give him a kiss on the head and tell him goodnight before we go to sleep.
"But that also helps me get a cup of tea made in the morning so it works for both of us."
