The house fire at Taradale is not being treated as suspicious.
Castlemaine Police Sergeant Steve Bax said the crime investigation unit attended the scene and deemed the fire not suspicious.
Sergeant Bax said some neighbours were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.
"Neighbours were evacuated due to possibility of asbestos in the house," he said.
"The house has been completely damaged and the elderly male occupant went to hospital for observation related to smoke inhalation.
"The five or six CFA units that were on scene did a great job."

The house fire in Taradale has been brought under control.
Eleven CFA trucks are on scene and a salvage unit is en route.
The CFA has advised the Mount Alexander Shire Council of the incident.

The CFA has also issued an advice message for the Taradale area with smoke visible from nearby roads and communities.
"There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions," the advice message reads.
What you should do:
- Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond.
- If you are sensitive to smoke or you live with someone who is sensitive to smoke you should close windows and doors. Turn off heating and cooling systems.
- To prevent the smell of smoke entering your home or business you should close windows and doors.

The fire in Taradale is still not under control and has completely engulfed the single-story weatherboard house.
A CFA spokesperson said extra CFA tankers are being called in to provide more water.

Six Country Fire Authority crews are working to control a house fire in Taradale.
The fire at a Davy Street property was called in just before 11.30am.
A CFA spokesperson said fire fighting units arrived on scene at about 11.40am.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a man, aged in his 90s, is being treated for smoke inhalation.
