Brett Whiteley: Drawing is Everything opens on July 31 and will be one of the first exhibitions to explore Whiteley's love of drawing and the important role the medium has played in his practice.
Other news:
Curatorial Manager Lauren Ellis said the exhibition features over 110 works including rarely-seen early images of Sydney and Europe, the great abstracts that brought Whiteley international fame in the 1960s.
She said it also displays the lyrical landscapes, portraits, interiors and nudes that established him as one of the most prominent Australian artists of the 20th century.
"If you think you know Brett Whiteley then you will get a surprise with this display because it's a wonderful opportunity to see the talent behind the hype," she said.
"Because there are so many drawings (across the exhibition) including quick sketches from his sketchbook, you can get a real sense of his hard working days in the studio when he was just making and practising so I think people will get a reminder of the talent he had.
"There are many pieces that people will make a connection with."
Ms Ellis said it had been a challenging few weeks to get the exhibition up and running.
"It has been a challenge to get everything together but it's not our first rodeo with lockdown exhibitions," she said.
"We just wrapped up Mary Quant which was a big exhibition but we are lucky that these exhibitions are a couple of years in the planning.
It's quite an enchanting exhibition that displays beautiful scenes of Australian and international cities and landscapes, detailed drawings of gardens, beautiful pictures of animals and wonderful pictures of famous faces and everyday people from across the world.

'We were lucky that all the work was able to come here and we are a very small team in a big building, we could get it all up.
"The doors are open, people can come and there is lots of room for a COVIDSafe visit and we are glad people will see that we are open."
The exhibition follows the popular Mary Quant: Fashion Revolutionary exhibition that wrapped up in early June.
Bendigo Art Gallery director Jessica Bridgfoot said the exhibition offers a rare opportunity for audiences to explore Brett Whiteley's prolific drawing practice.
"Whiteley's drawings frequently underpinned his research and preparation for paintings, and the exhibition brings several important paintings into dialogue with drawings from the time period or that relate to the work itself," she said.
"We are delighted to present this major exhibition from the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Bendigo, which offers an insight into the artist's creative and domestic life, his relationships, travels and interests."
Entry is free and Brett Whiteley: Drawing is Everything will run from July 31 to October 31.
