BENDIGO'S Lucas Herbert begun his British Open campaign with an even-par first round.
Being played at the famed Royal St. George's Golf Club in south East England, Herbert's even par 70 had him in a tie for 48th position after the first round.
Herbert's opening round featured 11 pars, four birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey.
Herbert birdied holes 10 (par 4, 415 yards), 12 (par 4, 379 yards), 13 (par 3, 456 yards) and 14 (par 5, 547 yards).
The in-form Herbert is competing at the British Open for a second time having finished tied for 51st in 2018 and is carrying strong form into the major tournament.
The 25-year-old, who is now ranked 49 in the world, locked in his British Open berth by winning the Irish Open two weeks ago before following up with a fourth-place finish at the Scottish Open last week.
