One of the most exciting days of the year for film buffs is Boxing Day.It is the day we are recovering from consuming far too much ham, turkey, pudding and lollies. So as a remedy to overindulging at the family feast, I always make an effort to see something released on Boxing Day.Last year we had a great deal to pick from as two films, The King’s Speech and Blue Valentine vied for Oscar nominations and others targeted family outings.A British film is again leading the Boxing Day charge this year with Meryl Streep’s portrayal of British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady sure to come under close review. The biopic is directed by Phyllidia Lloyd whose debut feature was Mamma Mia (also starring Streep). The Iron Lady is certain to draw crowds and mixed reviews given Thatcher’s controversial time as prime minister. Also coming to the silver screen on Boxing Day is The Adventures of Tin Tin.Beginning as a comic in 1929, young Belgian reporter Tin Tin became so popular he spawned his own television show, so it is no surprise he has made it to the big screen with his dog Snowy. The film is sure to be good with Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright and Steven Moffatt all involved in its production.Spielberg also has his hand in another film coming out on Boxing Day – drama war film War Horse.Telling the tale of one horse and its journey through World War I, it seems people will need to take some tissues to cinema. In the comedic stakes, Tower Heist is bringing together two generations of comic talent.Starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy (along with Matthew Broderick and Alan Alda), Tower Heist watches a group of hotel employees try to ensure their superannuation isn’t stolen by a greedy millionaire.Judging from the preview, it seems this could be a return to form for Murphy who has had a lean time at the cinemas in recent years. Also opening on Monday is Australian kids film Happy Feet 2 and a drama based on a true story title We Bought a Zoo.
