The 25-year-old secured a spot in the Travelers Championship field after shooting a six-under 66 at a qualifying event at Ellington Ridge Country Club.
He was originally scheduled to play back on the European Tour at the BMW International Open in Germany, but after the performance on Monday he remains in the United States.
"Another chance this week out here on @pgatour at @travelerschamp," he posted on Instagram.
"Looking forward to playing lots of tournament golf in the weeks to come."
Herbert made the turn at four-under without a blemish on his card to put himself in prime position.
On the back-nine he made two more birdies on 10 and 13 before a slight hiccup on the 16th which he bogeyed.
However, he gained the shot back on the very next hole with another birdie to finish third behind Stephen Stallings, Seamus Power, also avoiding the four-man playoff for the remaining spot.
The PGA Tour will make a move from California across the US continent to Connecticut on the east coast for the annual tournament held at TPC River Highlands.
Herbert, who is ranked 100th in the world, will look to improve on his most recent PGA Tour start, T18 at the Memorial Tournament earlier this month.
He tees up in the Travelers Championship at 10:45PM Thursday AEST alongside Puerto Rican Rafael Campos and American Ryan Brehm.
The 6,255m par-70 course located at Cromwell is part of the Tournament Players Club network of clubs, which features 119 bunkers and five water hazards.
Field includes defending champion Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka .
Australians include Jason Day, Matt Jones, Marc Leishman, Cameron Percy, Adam Scott and Cameron Smith.
