Bendigo hairdressers, beauty salons shut for Victoria's coronavirus lockdown

The state government confirmed from 11.59pm on Thursday, hairdressing, beauty, and personal care services would need to close for seven days.

Jools for Jim director Jill Cantwell said it was unfortunate to be back in this position after a tumultuous 2020.

"It is a shock and it won't be easy to deal with it," she said. "But if it has to be, let's just get on with it."

Ms Cantwell said it was "mayhem" in the salon on Thursday afternoon, with staff members trying to reorganise times for clients who had booked appointments.

"We have a really good reception team but it's just a matter of getting hold of people," she said.

"We're working very late on Thursday, and we will work late next Friday night and next Saturday if we're out of lockdown."

With JobKeeper ending earlier this year, Ms Cantwell said she knew some of her staff were worried about their income over the next seven days.

"We do feel very much for the people who live week-to-week," she said. "It's one thing for people to say 'sing out if you need help', but it can be really exposing for people to access help.

"We're trying to support staff where we can, but some people are very private and it's difficult to know what's going on."

Ms Cantwell said she was hopeful the lockdown would not extend past the seven days.

"If not, we will be in some real trouble," she said.
